Perspective

I get asked why I'm so calm. Why I don't get stressed out.
Well, obviously I get stressed out. I have fits of anger. I feel frustrated. I feel hurt by people and situations. I feel unable to cope.
But I constantly remind myself to gain perspective.
Through teary eyes or a bruised ego, I try and look at the big picture. Perhaps that's the zen part? I (thoroughly) soak up whatever I'm feeling, feel very sorry for myself, and then blearily move on. It's taken me a while, but I've finally become able to remove myself from a situation and decide whether it's worth my energy and time. Once you start, it becomes simpler to do. You just . . . let go.
I read recently that when receiving less than pleasing comments from someone, always question who said them and why. Is it someone who's opinion you value? If no, just let it pass. It's probably not about you anyway. If yes, then why do you think they said it? The very act of thinking it through gives distance.
And then sometimes, it just helps to surround yourself with the things and people that make you happy. That don't require any effort. That please you. The people with whom you can share simple pleasures and feel completely satisfied and refueled. Those that calm your spirit. It's often all you need to gain a little perspective.
